Many of the elements that seemed to start with Final Fantasy IV were present in previous games that were never released in the West, but you can’t deny how well-polished all of those elements are in this fourth game. Indeed, this game is accommodating in providing a relatively smooth journey for the user. There are some tricky parts, but it wants anyone to be able to finish the story.

When this game initially came out, I was completely enamored with it. I had such a good time with the first game that I decided to take a chance on this one with my hard-earned newspaper delivery money. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but it didn’t take long for it to seize my attention. The fantastic Red Wing theme plays in the opening scene as the crew of an airship ponders their questionable acts. A troubled man expresses doubts to his king only to be banished with his best buddy. A late-night conversation with his lover, who believes in him more than he does. I was thinking about Final Fantasy IV. My mind was etched with the song. I drew the characters on the back of every school worksheet and in the margins of every notepad.
My friends and I would talk about possible secrets. I worked through the game, getting dragged around by every wacky bit of dramatization. Melodrama abounds throughout Final Fantasy IV. When I reached the final dungeon, I halted and spent some time grinding because I was unprepared. When a friend from the neighborhood came over, I decided to show him the last boss, even if I couldn’t defeat him. Then, somehow, I succeeded. And what a boss he is. Final Fantasy always brings the heat with those final boss bouts, even if the setup is slightly bumpy. My friend and I cheered when I landed that last attack and heard the unmistakable crack and rumble of a dead Final Fantasy boss.
I ate dinner late that night, insisting on seeing the entire finish with my parents. I was apprehensive because it dared to end the story of the characters I adored. Who exactly are these new jerks? So, I will buy it, but don’t expect me to enjoy it as much as I did Final Fantasy IV. Life is amusing. I suppose we’ll get to that narrative in a few months. To say the least, when I was twelve, this game blew my mind. And, especially in the West, games like this were much more uncommon back then. I’m pretty sure I can’t separate my review from my nostalgia for the game. Not entirely. I’ve tried many times, and you’ve probably read some of them. I’m very aware of this game’s flaws. It borders on parody moments because the tale is so dramatic and relies on many cheap emotional bursts. In terms of character customization, there aren’t many possibilities. Friends, you pass through so many underground caves.
